Smucker GH-1016

Smucker Jan 27 2017LOOKING FOR A FOREVER HOME

If he’s Smucker (GH#1016), he has to be good! He is a super sweet 11 year old Golden male, tall, and weighs in at 85 lbs.  He came to GoldHeart as an owner give up, since they did not feel they could afford to keep up his medical care.

Smucker gets along well with the other four dogs in his foster home (3 females and 1 male, aged 7-14).  Smucker loves to play for short periods of time, and enjoys playing with a tennis ball and will fetch, but does not always bring it right back. He will let you take the ball from his mouth. He makes cute expressions all the time. He is a true “Velcro” golden and will be at your side constantly. Smucker loves to be petted and will allow you to give him attention for as long as you want. Once you stop, he will leave you alone and not insist on more.

He has not shown any aggressive behavior during his stay with us and will allow you to take away food or toys. Smucker loves riding in the car and will be at the door anytime he sees you getting ready to go out. He obeys well and knows how to sit and lay. He needs additional leash training as he tends to pull and is a very strong boy. He will stop these behaviors when told NO. At his foster home he has been left alone for up to 6 hours and we would consider him fully house trained. He sleeps on his bed all night long and only gets up when we get up.  He has been observed around small kids and was gentle with them. Smucker will make a great addition to any family. A home with another dog or two would be super for him.

His medical needs have been addressed, and at this point, he will require some ongoing care, that is not overly expensive (see below).  He needs long-term eye medications (three medications once a day, drops, ointment, and gel lubrication) for persistent dry eye, an antihistamine (once a day pill) for allergies, and a spray (once a day) for a yeast infection, which seems to continue to reoccur.  These medications cost approximately $40 a month for eye meds, $11 a month for KetoHex skin spray and another $60 a month for allergies.  Smucker’s current vet did not recommend that he see an allergist as his itchy skin cleared with the use of the allergy medication.

Smucker also had a large golf ball size growth on his right rear foot removed after arriving at GoldHeart. The pathology report came back as a soft tissue sarcoma (cancer), and the good news – his vet estimated there is only about a 20% chance of recurrence.

Smucker came from a breeder so he did not have much human interaction for his first 9 years.  His next 2 years was with a family who worked.  He did get a lot of love at this family but again was left alone much of the time.  He is a typical needy golden and loves to be with his humans.  We are looking for a home where he can get this and not be left alone for a normal work-day.  We want the rest of his life to be the best it can be.

If you are an approved Goldheart adopter and think Smucker could be the guy for you, please send an email to his foster family at hickmanr@yahoo.com. Smucker is being fostered in La Plata, MD.

If you are not yet approved by Goldheart, and are in our SERVICE AREA, please complete an adoption application at http://www.goldheart.org/adopting-a-golden/adoption-application/. There is a $30 non-refundable application fee that must be received before the approval process starts. The approval process can take several weeks since we rely on an all-volunteer support network to process your application, conduct the home visit, and check references. If approved, you can then inquire about Smucker if he is still available, and you can also inquire about any other available dog. Thank you for your patience and understanding!
